The scene is the 1973 "Manufactures Championship" at Orange County Raceway. The air is thick with pungent Nitro fumes and tire smoke, as everyone’s favorite "Flopper" pilot is inching towards the staging beams.
Sitting on the guardrail to the left we see Photographer Bob McClurg, to the right we see Photog Steve Reyes about to capture one of his soon to be famous Car Craft Centerspread images. To the far right we see Chevy teammate "Da Grump" checking out all the action.
Those who attended Orange County Raceway knew that the Pit-side Starting Line Grandstands could often times be the worst place to sit. On most evenings there was an off-shore breeze that would blow the tire smoke right in the stands, on calmer nights the smoke would linger there often times obscuring the action on the track, sometimes to the point of not being able to even see the race happen. At OC, the Spectator-side Grandstands was the place to be, there you had a full view of the iconic Tower and staging area…
Saturday Night at the OC, no better place to be….
