Dateline: Sunday, June 27,1965...Place: Dover Drag Strip in Wingdale, New York.
It was a wonderful sunny Sunday, as 2,000 spectators were on hand for "Dodge Day at Dover Drag Strip"; The headliner for the day was, Dick Landy squaring off against "Wild Bill" Flynn in a 3 out of 5 Match Race, in a West meets East Duel.
In the first round, Landy roared past Flynn going 10.01-138.05 compared to a losing 10.25- 136.03 mph. The second time up, "Wild-Bill" caught a red light and Dick turned a sizzling 9.98-138.08.
On the third and final run, Flynn again lost to the California car as Dick made a shocking pass at 9.92 at 140.03 mph. Dick remarked that Dover has terrific traction as proven his lowest et that he had ever turned (at that time).
We see in this painting, the boys have laid down the rosin, and "Wild Bill" is doing a burn-through trying to lay down a sticky launching pad for himself, as Landy starts his dodge in the background. This is the first round match at High Noon!
