In 1970 there was another Charger in the Chi-Town area that got a lot of attention for their long smoky burnouts,,,but no one boiled the hydes harder than Gary Dyer in Mr. Norms "Metalflake Red" Charger!!!
This red Charger had gone through a lot of changes in the couple of years the team ran the car, and this is the last version before it was retired...
This was also the end-of-the-road for the square framed cars, as the newer cars were being built with the now tradition narrowed chassis. This car also had full suspension, and maybe that's why the car did such hard burnouts, as it would raise up and stand tall on the rear tires..
My favorite feature was the White stripe running across the hood...At the time, we all thought Mopar was experimenting with some new graphic ideas, expecting to see these stripes on street cars soon...But the reason for the stripe, was a much more pragmatic cause.
This body was molded in "Metalflake Red" fiberglass, not painted. On an early run, the car got out of shape and hit the guardrail damaging the front end. Since this was a molded color, the body was placed back in the mold and a new nose was grafted on. The white tape stripe was applied, simply to cover the seam from the graft job...
