In 1981, Roland Leong hired second generation FC pilot Mike Dunn, to shoe his latest "King's Hawaiian Bread" entree. Before the year was out, Mike had won his first race as a Professional Driver at the "Golden Gate Nationals" in Fremont California.
In this painting, we see Mike earlier in the year, in Gainesville Florida. He heats the hides, to take on rival Gary Burgin's "Orange Baron" Mustang, in the far lane . Mike would later beat Gary in the Finals in Fremont for the Golden Gate National title..
I did this painting as a tribute to my late great friend Tom Stratton, the legendary painter who painted the Hawaiian. I believe this car had all hand painted decals. Tom would have to paint smaller versions of the decals so they would fit in the allotted space. This was a usual practice at the time, and was long before the "Corporate Graffiti" cars we see now...Now decals have to be applied to the cars in whatever size the Manufacture produces them. If the decal is 3 feet long, well that's how it would have to be on the car...
Now Roland was a master at collecting sponsors for his racing operations, that's why there are some many names on the car. However all the signs were made to fit the car, not the other way around...
