A 23 T-Bucket body dropped over a dragster chassis was the ultimate Hot Rod for me as a kid, and I attempted many times to build a model of this car back then.
Paul Stage from Rockford, Illinois owned this Cherry Red T-Bucket Dragster built by “Lil” John Buttera. It ran a 392 Chrysler Hemi bored out to 464ci, running on Gasoline with a Direct Converter.
For a dragster that dominated it’s class and won as many races as it did, this car always seems to fly under the radar in the annals of Drag Histories. Racking up a phenomenal list of race wins, running the AA/C class and Super Eliminator, the car won it’s Class and Super Eliminator at both the 1968 and 1969 Spring Nationals. Paul beat out Don Nicholson’s Cougar Funny Car, for the Super Eliminator title at the 68 US Nationals at Indy, setting a new Class Record with a 7.91et. Paul eventually lowered his ETs into the 7.50s, and continued competing in this car until the class was dropped in 1970.
These Roadster bodied dragsters were always a fan favorite, and this was one of the last successful cars created in this style..
