Its maximum speed was 4,520 miles per hour The The North American X-15 was a rocket powered aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force and the NASA as part of the X-Plane experimental aircraft series. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the 1960s, reaching the edge of space and returning with valuable data which was eventually used in Space Shuttle program. As of 2014, the X-15 holds the official world record for the highest speed ever reached by a manned, powered aircraft. Its maximum speed was 4,520 miles per hour (7,274 km/h).
In this scene from 1960 we see Scott Crossfield as he shakes down the X-15 after repairs made, from the previous hard landing which broke the bird in two. Seen here still wearing the primer paint on its back where the panels were replaced.
